Prioritize your oral health
Developing a good oral care routine helps you get rid of the plaque on your teeth. That’s important because plaque contains millions of damaging bacteria that can cause tooth decay and gum and periodontal disease.
You can get rid of plaque and limit bacteria levels if you:
- Brush after meals and before bed; you need to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush in a gentle, circular motion. Clean all the surfaces of your teeth and brush along the gumline. You can also gently brush your tongue, which is a common place for bacteria to hide.
- Floss at least once every day; you can either use a single piece of floss or floss picks, but make sure you wrap the floss around the widest part of the tooth as you go down in between your teeth. When you wrap the floss around the tooth, it helps to keep the floss firmly against the tooth surface, so it cleans better.
- Regular visits to your dentist and dental hygienist are another important part of your oral care routine. You should visit your dentist at least once each year for a dental exam and x-rays. It’s a great way to prevent small dental issues from becoming large dental problems.
- Your dental hygienist needs to give you a professional teeth cleaning once every six to twelve months to help keep your gums and supporting bone free from inflammation and infection caused by bacterial plaque. At a professional cleaning appointment, soft and hard deposits on your teeth are removed, your teeth are polished free of stains, and your gums will be monitored for any signs of inflammation.
