Find out how an implant restoration can greatly improve your smile after tooth loss.
Need to replace one or more missing teeth? If so, our Bethesda, MD, family dentist Dr. John Kelly is here to help restore your smile. Many people have heard about dental implants, small metal posts that are placed into the jawbone to support and hold false teeth in place; however, many people don’t understand exactly how they work and what an implant restoration is. Before deciding whether a dental implant is the right treatment option for you, here’s what you should understand about a dental implant restoration.
What is a dental implant?
Before you can understand an implant restoration you have to first understand what a dental implant is and how it works. Simply put, a dental implant is an artificial tooth root that looks like a small post or screw. This post or screw, often made from titanium, is inserted directly into the jawbone where the missing tooth used to be. From there, a structure known as an abutment is placed on top of the implant. The abutment will link up the implant, which is in the jawbone, with the artificial tooth (the part of the restoration that will be visible when you smile).
What is a dental implant restoration?
Once the abutment has been placed on top of the implant the next and final step is to place the dental restoration over the abutment to complete the implant. If you only need to replace a single missing tooth then our Bethesda, MD, family dentist will place a dental crown over the implant; however, if you need to replace several or even an entire row of teeth then a dental bridge or dentures will be attached to the top of the implant(s).
How long does it take to get a dental implant?
The process of getting a dental implant can take several months, depending on the number of implants you need and where they are being placed. It can take 3-6 months just for the jawbone and implant to fuse together.
How long will a dental implant last?
The reason many people choose to get dental implants is that they can last for the rest of your life. Just make sure that you are maintaining good oral hygiene and properly caring for your implant. While implants rarely need to be replaced, the dental crown or false teeth that are placed over the implant will need to be checked regularly by your dentist and will eventually need to be replaced every decade or so.
